FAQ

A bottle from his birth year is a safe choice. Choose a classic, age-worthy style if you are in doubt, and look for high fill level and condition A–A+ for an attractive presentation. At Bottles With History, the bottles are professionally stored, so the gift is ready to drink and reassuring.
Condition A to A+ describes the bottle’s physical condition, not the taste. A/A+ indicates a high fill level (often right up into the neck), intact capsule and nice label. It signals correct storage over the years and reduces the risk of oxidation—ideal when the wine is given as a gift.
A 40-year-old wine is more mature and nuanced than young wine. Fresh fruit notes turn into dried fruit, leather, mushrooms and tobacco; the tannins are softer, and the whole is more silky-smooth. Expect finesse rather than power—and decant carefully to remove sediment.
Start with the vintage (birth year), the recipient’s taste and whether the wine is to be drunk now. Classic, structured wines from recognised regions often keep best. Check fill level, condition A–A+ and documented storage. An attractive label and the wine’s story make the gift extra personal.
Stand the bottle upright 12–24 hours before serving. Open carefully, and decant slowly, only to separate sediment. Serve reds at approx. 16–18°C and whites at 10–12°C. Enjoy the wine shortly after opening—older vintages can lose charm if they stand for long.
