Vulture Torre Sveva 1966
The Vulture Torre Sveva 1966 is a red wine produced by Torre Sveva in the southern Italian region of Basilicata.
Basilicata is one of Italy's most mountainous and least populated regions. Its viticulture is largely centered around the extinct volcano, Monte Vulture. The vineyards in this area are characterized by black, volcanic soil that is highly rich in potassium.
This wine is made from Aglianico, a traditional Southern Italian grape variety frequently cultivated in Campania and Basilicata. In the volcanic environment of Vulture, the grape is known to produce deep and characterful red wines.
The 1966 vintage was bottled at 12% alcohol by volume in a 720 ml format. The bottling process was handled by EMMEGI S.p.A.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Basilicata
This region is one of Italy's least populated and most mountainous. Wine-wise, it centers around one giant: the extinct volcano Monte Vulture. This is where you find the Aglianico grape in perhaps its most mineral and austere form, known as Aglianico del Vulture. The soil is black, volcanic and rich in potassium, which gives the wines an almost "smoky" character.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
