About the region

Bairrada is a recognized wine region located in central Portugal, more specifically in the province of Beira Litoral. The area stretches from the Atlantic coast in the west to the mountainous Dão areas in the east. The region received its official status as a demarcated wine area (Região Demarcada) in 1979, but has a wine history that stretches back many centuries.

The geography gives Bairrada a distinct maritime climate with great influence from the Atlantic Ocean. This results in mild temperatures, cooling sea breezes and relatively large amounts of precipitation, which creates favorable conditions for viticulture. The soil consists predominantly of clay and limestone, and the name Bairrada itself originates from the Portuguese word "barro", which means clay.

The wine tradition in Bairrada is strongly linked to the local blue grape variety, Baga, which historically has dominated the region's production of red wines. In addition to the classic red wines, the region also has a long tradition of producing sparkling wines as well as white wines. Where production was previously subject to strict requirements regarding the use of the Baga grape, legislation has since the beginning of the 2000s opened up to a wider range of both national and international grape varieties.

Super service and very helpful. Lost one of the bottles during transport and reported it to Bottles With History. It was fixed immediately and a new bottle was sent immediately. (Actually a better wine in my opinion) It is very difficult to guarantee that older bottles are drinkable, like the Barolo from 69 I tried. Anders came to the rescue again and of course sent a new bottle of the same caliber. Thank you very much for the good service, can definitely recommend shopping here in safe hands.
