Moccagatta Barbaresco Riserva 1999

Produttori del Barbaresco is one of the world's most respected wine cooperatives, located in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. While the modern iteration was founded in 1958 by local winegrowers, its deeper history dates back to 1894 when Domizio Cavazza, the director of the local enological school, established the area's first cooperative. After being closed during the war years in 1942, it was successfully re-established. Today, the cooperative consists of 51 members who collectively own 110 hectares of land, exclusively planted with the Nebbiolo grape within the Barbaresco zone. This rare degree of specialization gives the cooperative a unique position as a producer of classic Barbaresco. The wine originates from Barbaresco, a classic Nebbiolo area situated in the Langhe hills east of Alba. Piedmont, which literally translates to "at the foot of the mountain," is framed by the Alps and is renowned for its dramatic, steep hills and strong focus on terroir. During autumn, these hills are frequently enveloped in a thick morning fog that protects the grapes and ensures a long, perfect ripening period. The 1999 vintage from this area achieved a score of 92 points and is described as an elegant year. The Nebbiolo grape, an Italian top variety known for producing wines with great structure, thrives in this specific environment and is the sole focus of the region's most prestigious wines. This specific release is the Moccagatta Barbaresco Riserva from the 1999 vintage, holding the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita classification. The cooperative is highly regarded for its single-vineyard crus that showcase the terroir mosaic of the appellation. According to the producer, during the best harvests, a portion of the wine sourced from renowned localities in the center of the typical zone is designated as a "Riserva" after reaching its fourth year of aging. The grapes for this Moccagatta release were cultivated by the vineyard owners Bellora, Casetta, Lignana, and Viglino, with a total production limited to 16,675 bottles.

About the region

Piedmont (which literally means "at the foot of the mountain") is located in northwestern Italy, surrounded by the Alps. It is considered one of the world's absolute most prestigious wine regions. The area is known for small, passionate, family-run wineries and a huge focus on terroir (how the soil and microclimate affect the wine).

Classic characteristics of Piedmont:
The royal wines: This is where the world-famous, complex and expensive red wines Barolo and Barbaresco come from (both made from 100% Nebbiolo).

Everyday heroes: In addition to Nebbiolo, the region is famous for the grapes Barbera (juicy, acidic and incredibly popular) and Dolcetto (dark, soft and fruity).

The white and sweet: Piedmont also makes the crisp white wine Gavi and the famous, lightly sparkling dessert bubbles Moscato d'Asti.

The landscape: Dramatic, steep hills – especially in the Langhe sub-area. The hills are often shrouded in thick morning mist in autumn, which protects the grapes and allows for a long, perfect ripening.

Gastronomy: An absolute mecca for food lovers. The area is world famous for the exclusive white truffles from Alba, hazelnuts and rich, simmered dishes that scream with a glass of local red wine.

Super service and very helpful. Lost one of the bottles during transport and reported it to Bottles With History. It was fixed immediately and a new bottle was sent immediately. (Actually a better wine in my opinion) It is very difficult to guarantee that older bottles are drinkable, like the Barolo from 69 I tried. Anders came to the rescue again and of course sent a new bottle of the same caliber. Thank you very much for the good service, can definitely recommend shopping here in safe hands.
