Montefico Barbaresco Riserva 2007 nr 6497
The Montefico Barbaresco Riserva 2007 is a classic Italian red wine produced by Produttori del Barbaresco. This highly respected cooperative was established in its modern form in 1958 by local vine growers, though its deeper history dates back to 1894 when Domizio Cavazza, the director of the local enological school, founded the area's first cooperative. Today, the organization consists of 51 members who collectively own 110 hectares, exclusively planted with the Nebbiolo grape within the Barbaresco zone. This rare degree of specialization gives the cooperative a unique position as a producer of classic Barbaresco.
The wine originates from the Barbaresco appellation in the Langhe hills of Piedmont, a prestigious wine region in northwestern Italy surrounded by the Alps. The steep hills of the Langhe are often enveloped in thick autumn morning fog, which protects the grapes and ensures a long, perfect ripening period. The 2007 vintage, which achieved a score of 91 points and is described as elegant, perfectly reflects the conditions of this renowned area. Nebbiolo, the sole varietal used for the appellation's top wines, is an Italian top grape known for producing elegant wines with great structure, deeply rooted in the soils of Piedmont.
This specific release is a Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) Riserva, sourced entirely from the Montefico vineyard, which is tended by the vine growers Grasso, Rocca, and Vacca. Produttori del Barbaresco is celebrated for its nine single-vineyard crus, which together illustrate the diverse terroir of the appellation. According to the producer, in the best vintages, a portion of the grapes from historic vineyards in the center of the typical zone is vinified separately. After reaching its fourth year of aging at the winery, the resulting wine is officially designated as a Riserva. For this 2007 release, a total of 13,333 bottles were produced.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Piedmont
Piedmont (which literally means "at the foot of the mountain") is located in northwestern Italy, surrounded by the Alps. It is considered one of the world's absolute most prestigious wine regions. The area is known for small, passionate, family-run wineries and a huge focus on terroir (how the soil and microclimate affect the wine).
Classic characteristics of Piedmont:
The royal wines: This is where the world-famous, complex and expensive red wines Barolo and Barbaresco come from (both made from 100% Nebbiolo).
Everyday heroes: In addition to Nebbiolo, the region is famous for the grapes Barbera (juicy, acidic and incredibly popular) and Dolcetto (dark, soft and fruity).
The white and sweet: Piedmont also makes the crisp white wine Gavi and the famous, lightly sparkling dessert bubbles Moscato d'Asti.
The landscape: Dramatic, steep hills – especially in the Langhe sub-area. The hills are often shrouded in thick morning mist in autumn, which protects the grapes and allows for a long, perfect ripening.
Gastronomy: An absolute mecca for food lovers. The area is world famous for the exclusive white truffles from Alba, hazelnuts and rich, simmered dishes that scream with a glass of local red wine.
