Cuvée de Noble Souche Bourgogne Domaine Denis Mortet 2008
The 2008 Cuvée de Noble Souche is an Appellation Contrôlée wine produced by Domaine Denis Mortet. Following the sudden passing of Denis Mortet in 2006, the domain was taken over by his son, Arnaud Mortet, who vinified this specific vintage. The estate, originally rooted in Gevrey-Chambertin, was founded in 1956 by Charles Mortet before Denis established his own domain in 1991 with half of his father's vineyards. Under Denis's leadership throughout the 1990s, the estate became highly celebrated for its deep extraction and precise vinification. Arnaud continues this legacy, maintaining the modern vision that set a new standard for the Côte de Nuits.
This wine originates from the overarching Bourgogne AOC, a regional classification established in 1937 that forms the foundation of the area's quality hierarchy. The Burgundy region in eastern France was historically shaped by medieval monks who meticulously mapped its countless terroirs, creating a finely meshed system of climats. Spanning from the Yonne department in the north to the Rhône department in the south, the area is characterized by a continental climate with cold winters, cool springs, and warm summers. The 2008 vintage in this region achieved a score of 90 points, defined by structure and freshness in a classic style. These climatic conditions, combined with the classic clay and limestone soils, provide an ideal environment for the early-ripening Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes that almost exclusively define the region's production.
Today, Domaine Denis Mortet has grown from its original 4.5 hectares to 16 hectares, encompassing prestigious Grand Cru positions such as Chambertin, Bonnes-Mares, Mazis-Chambertin, and Échézeaux. Arnaud Mortet, who has managed the estate alongside his mother Laurence and sister Clémence since 2013, ensures that the production remains true to the family's exacting standards. Bottled at 13% alcohol by volume, this cuvée reflects the foundational qualities of the Burgundy appellation and the dedicated craftsmanship of the Mortet family.
