Bouzeron Bouchard Père & Fils 1994
The 1994 Bouzeron from Bouchard Père & Fils is a white wine originating from the Côte Chalonnaise in the southern part of Burgundy, produced during a year characterized as an uneven and difficult vintage. Bouzeron is a small communal area located southwest of Beaune, situated at an altitude between 270 and 350 meters. While Burgundy is globally recognized for its fine-meshed system of climats shaped by medieval monks and its heavy focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Bouzeron stands out as the only communal area in the region dedicated exclusively to the Aligoté grape.
The Aligoté vines in Bouzeron are planted with a mandatory density of at least 8,000 vines per hectare on selected south-facing slopes. The local terroir features a semi-continental climate with cold winters and warm summers, combined with soils consisting mainly of clay-limestone and white marl deposits from the Oxfordian stage of the Jurassic period. This specific environment, along with strictly regulated lower yields of 45 hectoliters per hectare compared to the broader regional standards, defines the viticultural foundation of the area. The recognition of Bouzeron as the premier site for Aligoté in Burgundy was heavily pioneered by Aubert de Villaine.
Bouchard Père & Fils, the producer of this wine, is one of the oldest wine houses in Burgundy, founded in 1731. The family established a strong trading base over several generations before officially adopting the name Bouchard Père et Fils in 1785. Their history is deeply connected to some of the most prominent vineyards in the region, marked by historical acquisitions such as the Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus in 1791 and the Château de Beaune between 1810 and 1820, which remains their headquarters. Today, the estate is the largest vineyard owner in the Côte d'Or, managing 130 hectares that include 12 hectares of Grand Cru and 74 hectares of Premier Cru parcels. The wine was bottled directly by the house, as noted by the "Mis en bouteille par la maison" designation on the label.
The history of the wine

Burgundy
Burgundy in eastern France was shaped by medieval monks who mapped the area's countless terroirs. The region grows almost exclusively Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and has turned terroir into an art form with its finely meshed system of climats. From Chablis in the north to the Côte d'Or and Mâconnais in the south, the limestone soil yields some of the world's most sought-after and elegant wines.
