The 1998 Don Melchor Private Reserve is a premier red wine produced by Concha y Toro, one of Latin America's largest and most historically significant wine producers. Founded in 1883 by the Chilean politician and businessman Don Melchor de Concha y Toro, the estate has deep historical ties to France, having originally brought winemakers and vines from Bordeaux to Chile. Headquartered in Pirque, south of Santiago, the producer honors its founder with this top-tier wine. The creation of Don Melchor represents a renewed French-Chilean cooperation, commissioning French winemakers to craft a world-class wine from the famed Puente Alto Vineyard that stands comparable in stature to the fine wines of Europe.
This wine originates from the Puente Alto vineyard in the Maipo Valley, Chile's oldest and most classic wine region, which was established in the mid-nineteenth century. Situated on the southern edge of Santiago at the foot of the Andes Mountains, Puente Alto is widely regarded as Chile's "Grand Cru" zone for ultra-premium red wines. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 600 to 800 meters along the Maipo River. The climate here is heavily influenced by the Andes, which cast morning shadows over the vines and generate cool evening breezes. This creates significant diurnal temperature shifts. The vines are planted in nutrient-poor, alluvial soils of Andean origin with a high stone content, ensuring excellent drainage and naturally limiting vine growth to produce small, concentrated berries.
The 1998 vintage is crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the world's most renowned dark grape varieties for structured red wines, frequently cultivated in prominent regions such as Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Tuscany. In Puente Alto, Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant variety, accounting for over eighty percent of the plantings. Bottled at 13.5 percent alcohol, this Private Reserve reflects the historical dedication to establishing noble French grape varieties in the Chilean terroir.

Storage
Store the bottle horizontally at 12–14°C and avoid direct sunlight, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations.
Opening
Allow the bottle to stand upright for 24–48 hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Use a professional corkscrew and open carefully.

Serve at 17–18°C and be patient – there is a great difference in how and how quickly wines open up when they are aerated.
