Mosen Pago Carralon Cariñena Reserva 1953
The Mosen Pago Carralon Cariñena Reserva is a 1953 vintage produced by Vicente, Suso y Pérez, a winery associated with the Suso family. Bottled at 13.5% alcohol by volume, this limited reserve wine originates from the specific vineyards of Pago Carralon.
The wine is produced in Cariñena, a Denominación de Origen (DO) located in the province of Zaragoza within the autonomous region of Aragón in northeastern Spain. Situated between Madrid and Barcelona, Cariñena is one of Spain's oldest wine regions, with a documented viticultural history dating back to Roman times. It was granted DO status in 1932, making it one of the country's very first recognized appellations.
The region is characterized by a distinct continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold winters. This climate is moderated by the Cierzo, a northwest wind that keeps the vines dry. The vineyards are planted in diverse soils ranging from brown clay and limestone to stone and gravel, often with a high iron content. Although the region gave its name to the Cariñena grape, known elsewhere as Carignan, the area is heavily planted with Garnacha today, alongside varieties such as Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, and Mazuelo. The region has a strong historical focus on cultivating old vines.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Cariñena
Cariñena is a historic wine region located in the province of Zaragoza in the autonomous region of Aragon in northeastern Spain. The area is centered around the plateau Campo de Cariñena in the Ebro valley, where the vineyards stretch from 400 to over 800 meters in altitude up towards the mountain range Sierra de la Virgen. The region is known for its stony and calcareous soil, which locally has given rise to the nickname "El Vino de las Piedras" (the wine of the stones).
The climate in Cariñena is distinctly continental with extreme temperature fluctuations. The summers are very hot, while the winters are cold, and there is a large difference between day and night temperatures. The area is furthermore characterized by the cold and dry north wind known as "cierzo", which helps to keep the vineyards healthy and contributes to the development of the grapes in the otherwise low-rainfall landscape.
Cariñena has one of Spain's oldest wine traditions, which can be dated back to Roman times, and the region achieved its official Denominación de Origen (DO) status already in 1932. The area has given its name to the grape variety Cariñena (also known as Carignan or Mazuelo), which historically has played a major role in the local production. Today, the region is largely dominated by the Garnacha grape, and the area contains a significant proportion of very old vines. The production has historically been driven by both large cooperatives and private wineries, which produce wines based on the harsh terroir.
