Les Closiers Châteauneuf du Pape Ogier Caves des Papes 2006
"Les Closiers" is a 2006 vintage red wine produced by Ogier Caves des Papes under the Appellation Châteauneuf-du-Pape Contrôlée. Created from a selection of the estate's finest cuvées, the wine is aged in foudres and conical oak casks within the producer's ancient cellars, located in the very heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is situated in the Southern Rhône valley, just north of Avignon, and stands as one of France's most renowned red wine appellations. The broader Rhône region in southeastern France has a rich viticultural history dating back to Roman times. While the northern part of the valley is characterized by steep slopes, the warmer southern section provides the ideal environment for the classic blends that culminate in this specific area.
This wine is crafted from a traditional blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault. Grenache, the French name for Garnacha, typically dominates the blends in this appellation and is widely cultivated across the Rhône and Southern France. It is supported by Syrah, a blue grape also known as Shiraz, which is frequently grown in the Rhône valley as well as in international regions like Australia and California. The inclusion of Mourvèdre and Cinsault, both classic Mediterranean varieties found throughout Provence and the Rhône, completes the composition of the 2006 release.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Côtes du Rhône
The Rhône Valley in south-eastern France has grown wine since Roman times. The region falls into two parts: the northern section with steep slopes, where Syrah produces deep wines in Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, and the warmer south, where Grenache-based blends culminate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wines are spicy and powerful with dark berries, pepper and garrigue herbs.
