Chianti Classico Riserva Antinori 1998
The 1998 Chianti Classico Riserva is an unfiltered red wine produced by the historic Marchesi Antinori. It is crafted using selected Sangiovese grapes harvested from the Antinori estates located in the heart of the Chianti Classico area. Following the harvest, the wine undergoes a specific maturation process, aging for approximately 14 months in small oak barrels before spending at least another 12 months resting in the bottle.
Marchesi Antinori stands as one of the world's oldest family-owned businesses, having produced wine continuously since 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori was inducted into the Florentine Winemakers Guild. Now in its 26th generation, the estate is guided by three sisters—Albiera, who serves as president, Allegra, and Alessia. Throughout its six centuries of operation, the family has retained full control of the company. In modern times, Antinori has been a defining force in Italian winemaking, famously breaking traditional rules to create the first Super Tuscans in the 1970s. Today, their extensive portfolio includes nine prestigious estates across Italy, alongside international ventures.
The wine originates from Tuscany, an iconic region with winemaking roots tracing back to the Etruscans. More specifically, it hails from Chianti Classico, the historic core situated between Florence and Siena, which holds its own DOCG classification marked by the traditional black rooster symbol. The foundation of this appellation is Sangiovese, Italy's primary grape variety, which is prominently grown in Tuscany, Umbria, Emilia Romagna, and California. The 1998 vintage in this region is described as fruity and round, achieving a score of 89 points.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Tuscany
Tuscany is one of Italy's most iconic wine regions, with roots reaching back to the Etruscans. Sangiovese is the undisputed principal grape and forms the basis for classics such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. From the 1970s the prestigious Super Tuscans also emerged along the coast. The rolling hills produce structured red wines with cherry, herbs and firm tannins.
