Cornas Jean Lionnet 1993
The 1993 Cornas from Jean Lionnet is a French red wine originating from the Rhône Valley. Produced by Jean Lionnet, an estate winegrower, this wine was bottled directly at the property. It holds the Appellation Contrôlée classification, reflecting the strict viticultural standards of its origin.
The Rhône Valley in southeastern France has a rich history of viticulture dating back to Roman times. The region is geographically divided, with the northern part characterized by steep slopes. Within this northern section lies Cornas, a small appellation situated on the right bank of the Rhône River, south of Saint-Joseph and opposite the city of Valence. Granted AOC status in 1938, Cornas covers only about 145 hectares of planted vineyards, making it one of the smallest appellations in the northern Rhône.
The climate in Cornas is heavily influenced by continental weather patterns, featuring hot summers and cold winters. The area's south-facing, steep slopes provide maximum sun exposure, establishing it as one of the warmest appellations in the northern Rhône—a characteristic reflected in its Celtic name, which translates to "burnt earth." The terroir consists almost entirely of weathered granite mixed with gneiss and sand, often structured in terraced walls that are challenging to cultivate with machinery. By appellation rules, the wine is crafted exclusively from Syrah, a dark-skinned grape variety also known as Shiraz, which is prominently grown in the Rhône Valley as well as in regions like Australia, California, and Washington. Unlike some neighboring appellations, Cornas does not permit the addition of any white grape varieties.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Côtes du Rhône
The Rhône Valley in south-eastern France has grown wine since Roman times. The region falls into two parts: the northern section with steep slopes, where Syrah produces deep wines in Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, and the warmer south, where Grenache-based blends culminate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wines are spicy and powerful with dark berries, pepper and garrigue herbs.
