Cuvée du Cerf Costières de Nîmes Domaine Les Sources l'Amarine 1997
The 1997 Cuvée du Cerf is a red wine produced by Domaine Les Sources l'Amarine under the Appellation Costières de Nîmes Contrôlée in France. The estate's history traces back to the 17th century when it belonged to the Duke of Uzès. Spanning 50 hectares, the property was owned and operated by Georges Teissonniere and his cousin at the time of this release. This particular edition was selected as the "Hunting Wine of the Year 1998" (Årets Jagtvin 1998). The label features a reindeer motif chosen by Head Huntsman Mogens Andersen, highlighting the unique characteristic of the reindeer as the only deer species where both sexes bear antlers, including a distinctive shovel-shaped tine used to clear snow for winter feeding.
Costières de Nîmes represents the southernmost appellation of the Rhône Valley, situated between the Rhône delta and the Mediterranean Sea. The broader Rhône region has a rich viticultural heritage dating back to Roman times, with the warmer southern section being particularly renowned for its traditional blends. Granted AOC status in 1986, Costières de Nîmes covers around 4,000 hectares on a gently rolling plateau. The climate is distinctly Mediterranean, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters. The vineyards are significantly influenced by the dry northwesterly Mistral wind and the cooling Marin breeze blowing in from the sea.
The wine is crafted from a blend of Syrah and Grenache, both of which are prominent grape varieties frequently cultivated throughout the Rhône region. The vines are planted in a specialized local soil known as "Gress." This terroir is composed of large, rounded stones, or galets roulés, mixed with red clay and sand from the ancient riverbed of the Rhône. These stones serve a vital function in the vineyards, absorbing the intense heat of the sun during the day and slowly releasing it to the vines during the cooler nights.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Côtes du Rhône
The Rhône Valley in south-eastern France has grown wine since Roman times. The region falls into two parts: the northern section with steep slopes, where Syrah produces deep wines in Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, and the warmer south, where Grenache-based blends culminate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wines are spicy and powerful with dark berries, pepper and garrigue herbs.
