Côtes-du-Ventoux Domaine La Martinelle 2005
The 2005 Côtes-du-Ventoux from Domaine La Martinelle is a French wine produced in the southeastern part of the Rhône Valley. Crafted by Corinna Kruse and bottled directly at the estate, this wine holds the Appellation Côtes du Ventoux Contrôlée classification and has an alcohol content of 14.5%.
The Rhône Valley has a rich history of viticulture dating back to Roman times, divided into the steep slopes of the north and the warmer southern sector. This wine originates from the southern part, specifically within the Côtes-du-Ventoux appellation. Stretching across more than 50 municipalities in the Vaucluse department, the vineyards form an amphitheater on the lower slopes of the Monts de Vaucluse and Mont Ventoux, a peak famously known as the "Giant of Provence." The appellation gained its official AOC status in 1973 under the name Côtes-du-Ventoux, before officially changing to Ventoux in 2009.
While the climate is predominantly Mediterranean, it is heavily influenced by the altitude and the surrounding mountains. Mont Ventoux creates a cooler microclimate with significant temperature variations between day and night. This environment, combined with the strong Mistral wind, leads to a longer and slower ripening period for the grapes, a defining characteristic that distinguishes the area from the warmer, lower-lying appellations of the Rhône Valley. The vines are rooted in highly varied soils consisting primarily of red clay, limestone, sand, marl, and stony scree from ancient mountain deposits.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Côtes du Rhône
The Rhône Valley in south-eastern France has grown wine since Roman times. The region falls into two parts: the northern section with steep slopes, where Syrah produces deep wines in Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, and the warmer south, where Grenache-based blends culminate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wines are spicy and powerful with dark berries, pepper and garrigue herbs.
