Crozes Hermitage Caveaux Saint-Gens 1988
The 1988 Crozes Hermitage from Caveaux Saint-Gens is a dry red wine produced in the Rhône region of southeastern France. Classified as an Appellation Contrôlée, this wine originates from the eleven wine-producing villages that surround the famous Hermitage mountain near Tain.
The Rhône Valley has a rich history of viticulture dating back to Roman times. The region is geographically divided into two distinct parts: the northern section, characterized by its steep slopes, and the warmer southern area. Crozes Hermitage is the largest appellation in the Northern Rhône, completely encircling the renowned Hermitage area. It serves as a significant gateway to the terroir of the Northern Rhône.
This wine is made from Syrah, a blue grape variety that is also widely known as Shiraz. While Syrah is prominently cultivated in the Rhône Valley, it is also a typical variety found in wine regions across Australia, California, and Washington. In the Crozes Hermitage appellation, the Syrah grape is dedicated to the production of red wines, whereas the local white wines are crafted from Marsanne and Roussanne.

Côtes du Rhône
The Rhône Valley in south-eastern France has grown wine since Roman times. The region falls into two parts: the northern section with steep slopes, where Syrah produces deep wines in Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, and the warmer south, where Grenache-based blends culminate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wines are spicy and powerful with dark berries, pepper and garrigue herbs.

Storage
Store the bottle horizontally at 12–14°C and avoid direct sunlight, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations.
Opening
Allow the bottle to stand upright for 24–48 hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Use a professional corkscrew and open carefully.
Enjoyment
Serve at 17–18°C and be patient – there is a great difference in how and how quickly wines open up when they are aerated.
