The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Lisboa
Lisboa is a Portuguese wine region that stretches along the Atlantic coast north and west of the country's capital, Lissabon. The region, which until 2008 was known under the name Estremadura, is strongly influenced by its maritime climate. The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the cool sea breezes play a crucial role in viticulture, as they moderate the temperatures in the vineyards and protect the vines against extreme heat. The landscape is hilly and known for its many historic windmills, which testify to the constant wind from the sea.
The wine tradition in Lisboa is broad, and the region is one of Portugal's largest measured by production volume. Historically, the area has been dominated by large cooperatives that produced wine in large quantities, but in recent times there has been an increased focus on site-specific wines from independent wineries. The region contains nine specific DOC appellations, including historic areas such as Colares, Carcavelos and Bucelas. In addition, a large amount of wine is produced under the classification Vinho Regional Lisboa, which gives the winemakers flexibility to work with many different grape varieties.
In Lisboa, a wide range of both local and international grapes are grown. Among the most widespread white varieties are Arinto and Fernão Pires, while the red varieties often include Castelão, Touriga Nacional and Aragonez as well as international variants such as Cabernet Sauvignon. The great geographical variation from the coast and into the hinterland creates a number of different microclimates, which makes Lisboa a versatile region with the production of both red, white and fortified wines.
