Caldaro La Mia Cantina 1966
The 1966 Caldaro from La Mia Cantina is a red wine originating from the Lago di Caldaro Denominazione di Origine Controllata in Northern Italy. Bottled at 12.30% alcohol in a 720ml format, this release was sourced directly from the classic area of origin and selected by a commission of experts. The wine was bottled outside the immediate production zone and originates from a private cellar collection.
Caldaro, also known by its German name Kalterer See, is situated around the small Lake Caldaro southwest of Bolzano. The area reflects the officially bilingual nature of the Trentino-Alto Adige region, boasting a strong Tyrolean wine culture. The local climate is heavily influenced by the Alps, yet moderated by the lake's heat-buffering effect and the surrounding mountains. This unique topography provides long, warm days followed by distinctly cool nights. The vineyards are planted on soils composed of moraine gravel, limestone, clay, and volcanic porphyry left behind by Ice Age deposits. The area is traditionally dedicated to the local Schiava grape, known in German as Vernatsch, which naturally yields wines with moderate alcohol levels.
The broader Trentino-Alto Adige region is characterized by its alpine landscape, where vineyards are nestled between mountains, valleys, and cool elevations. The region is divided into two distinct wine identities: Trentino in the south and Alto Adige, or Südtirol, in the north. The cool climate, significant variations in altitude, and stony soils contribute to the production of alpine wines recognized for their balance, elegance, and strong local identity.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Trentino Alto Adige
Trentino Alto Adige is an alpine-influenced wine region in northern Italy, where the vineyards lie among mountains, valleys and cool altitudes. The region effectively comprises two distinct wine identities: Trentino to the south and Alto Adige, or Südtirol, to the north. Trentino is especially known for Trento DOC, sparkling wine made by the classic method, as well as Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Teroldego and Marzemino. Alto Adige is known for elegant, fresh and aromatic wines from Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Bianco, Schiava, Lagrein and Pinot Nero. The cool climate, the great differences in altitude and the limestone, porphyry and stony soils give wines with high freshness, pure fruit and clear precision. The region is known for alpine wines with balance, elegance and a strong local identity.
