Mercurey Maison Louis Latour 1993
Maison Louis Latour, founded in 1797 in Aloxe-Corton, is one of the few major Burgundy houses to maintain continuous family ownership for two and a half centuries. Currently led by the 11th generation, Louis-Fabrice Latour, the house is the largest private landowner on the Corton hill in the Côte de Beaune, which is home to the Corton Grand Cru and Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru. Alongside their own vineyard production, Latour operates an extensive négociant business, distributing wines from across Burgundy, and owns estates in Beaujolais and Chablis. The house represents a classic, traditional Burgundy style and is entirely distinct from Château Latour in Pauillac.
This 1993 Mercurey Appellation Contrôlée originates from the Burgundy region in eastern France, an area where the fine-meshed system of climats was originally shaped by medieval monks. Mercurey is located in the northern part of the Côte Chalonnaise, between Rully and Givry, and stands as the region's largest village appellation in both area and production. The vineyards here feature clay-limestone and marl soils, situated on slopes at altitudes ranging from 230 to 350 meters. Recognized as the most serious and highest-producing Pinot Noir appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise, Mercurey also contains 30 Premier Cru Climats. The 1993 vintage from this area achieved a score of 85 points, noted for presenting a good structure and a classic style.
The wine is bottled at 13% alcohol by volume in a 750 ml format. It was prepared and bottled by Louis Latour under their négociant activities.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Burgundy
Burgundy in eastern France was shaped by medieval monks who mapped the area's countless terroirs. The region grows almost exclusively Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and has turned terroir into an art form with its finely meshed system of climats. From Chablis in the north to the Côte d'Or and Mâconnais in the south, the limestone soil yields some of the world's most sought-after and elegant wines.
