Merlot Comte del Mar

Merlot Comte del Mar is a red wine produced by Comte del Mar, an estate that represents the many dedicated wine farmers of Chile. Bottled at 13% alcohol, this wine is crafted entirely from Merlot. Originally known from France, this classic blue grape is typically cultivated in renowned areas such as Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Northern Italy, but it has also found an exceptional home in the South American terroir. The wine originates from the Valle Central, or Central Valley, which stands as Chile's largest and most significant wine-producing region. Stretching over 400 kilometers from the Maipo Valley south of Santiago down to the Maule Valley, the area forms a massive valley floor situated between the towering Andes Mountains to the east and the Coastal Cordillera to the west. The vineyards are planted in nutrient-rich, alluvial soils consisting of clay, gravel, and silt, which have been deposited over millennia by rivers flowing down from the Andes.Chile offers extraordinary conditions for viticulture, and the Central Valley benefits from a predominantly Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The vineyards located along the foothills of the Andes receive abundant sunshine during the day, ensuring optimal ripening of the grapes. At night, cold air currents descend from the mountains, creating a significant diurnal temperature shift that is crucial for preserving the natural acidity of the fruit. Due to the dry summer months, the vines rely heavily on irrigation using fresh meltwater from the snow-capped Andean peaks. The winemaking tradition in the Valle Central dates back to the mid-1500s when Spanish settlers planted the first vines. Today, it remains the historical and production heart of Chilean wine. Thanks to the country's natural geographical isolation, the region has historically been spared from the phylloxera pest, meaning that many of the vines in the area are able to grow on their own original rootstocks.

About the region

Valle Central (Central Valley) is Chile's largest and most significant wine region, stretching over 400 kilometers from the Maipo Valley south of the capital Santiago down to the Maule Valley. Geographically, the region constitutes an enormous valley floor located between the high Andes Mountains to the east and the coastal mountain range (Cordillera de la Costa) to the west. The area encompasses several recognized subregions, including Maipo, Rapel, Curicó, and Maule, which all benefit from the nutrient-rich, alluvial soils consisting of clay, gravel, and silt, deposited over millennia by the rivers from the Andes Mountains.

The climate in Valle Central is predominantly Mediterranean with warm, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The region's location between the two mountain ranges creates ideal conditions for viticulture. During the day, the abundant sun ensures an optimal ripening of the grapes, while cold air currents from the Andes Mountains at night provide a significant drop in temperature. This large difference between day and night temperatures is crucial for preserving the grapes' natural acidity. Due to the dry summers, the vineyards are highly dependent on irrigation with meltwater from the snow-capped mountain peaks.

The wine tradition in Valle Central dates back to the mid-1500s, when Spanish settlers planted the first vines. Today, the region constitutes the historical and production heart of Chilean wine. The area is especially known for its red wines based on classic French grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Chile's signature grape, Carmenère, but white wine grapes like Chardonnay are also grown. Thanks to the country's natural geographical isolation, the region has historically been spared from the grape phylloxera (phylloxera), which means that many vines in the area grow on their own, original roots.

Super service and very helpful. Lost one of the bottles during transport and reported it to Bottles With History. It was fixed immediately and a new bottle was sent immediately. (Actually a better wine in my opinion) It is very difficult to guarantee that older bottles are drinkable, like the Barolo from 69 I tried. Anders came to the rescue again and of course sent a new bottle of the same caliber. Thank you very much for the good service, can definitely recommend shopping here in safe hands.
