Miraflores Vineyards San Fernando Valley Viña Santa Carolina 1993
The 1993 Miraflores Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon is produced by Viña Santa Carolina S.A. The estate was founded in 1875 by Luis Pereira, who collaborated with French enologist Germain Bachelet to select noble grape varieties for cultivation in Chile. Together, they planted vines in valleys such as Maipo, Lontué, and San Fernando, recognizing the favorable climate and soil conditions of these areas.
This specific wine originates from the Miraflores Vineyards in the San Fernando Valley. This area is situated within the broader Colchagua Valley in central Chile, approximately 130 kilometers south of Santiago. As part of the Rapel Valley in the Central Valley region, Colchagua holds official DO status and stretches from the Andes Mountains in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west. The region experiences a Mediterranean climate with warm days and cool nights, moderated by the Humboldt Current, creating significant diurnal temperature shifts. The local soils vary from alluvial gravel and sand on the valley floor to chalk and clay in the higher elevations.
The wine is made exclusively from Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the world's most recognized blue grapes used for structured red wines, frequently cultivated in prominent regions like Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Tuscany. Following fermentation, half of the wine was aged for six months in American oak barrels, while the other half remained in stainless steel tanks. The two portions were subsequently blended and bottled, resting for an additional six months prior to release. The wine is bottled at 12% alcohol by volume.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Colchagua-vallei
Colchagua Valley lies in central Chile about 130 kilometres south of Santiago and is part of the larger Rapel Valley within the Central Valley region. The area holds official DO status and is one of Chile's most acclaimed wine regions, stretching from the Andes in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west.
The climate is Mediterranean with warm days, cool nights moderated by the Humboldt Current, and large diurnal temperature swings, while the soils range from alluvial gravel and sand on the valley floor to limestone and clay in the higher zones. Carmenère is the region's signature grape and yields full-bodied, powerful wines, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Malbec and Merlot. The style includes ripe blackberry, plum, black cherry, cocoa, pepper, spices, tobacco and firm but rounded tannins. The area contains prestigious subzones such as Apalta and is known as home to some of South America's most structured and age-worthy red wines.
