Conde de Siruela Ribera del Duero Reserva 1995
The 1995 Conde de Siruela Reserva is a red wine produced by Bodegas Santa Eulalia S.A. in the historic wine town of La Horra. Situated in the sun-baked and extreme climate of northern Spain, the winery experienced a significant turning point in 1988 when it was acquired by the well-established Frutos Villar wine family. This acquisition allowed the family to secure deep roots in the heart of one of the country's most prestigious wine regions and expand their traditional wine empire. The wine is elaborated and bottled directly on the property.
This Denominación de Origen Reserva is made exclusively from 100 percent Tinto Fino, the local name for Spain's primary grape variety, Tempranillo, which is widely planted across regions like Ribera del Duero and Rioja. The production relies on a rigorous selection of grapes sourced directly from the estate's own vineyards in La Horra. Following the harvest, the wine undergoes a careful elaboration and aging process in accordance with its classification.
The vineyards are located in Ribera del Duero, an acclaimed appellation within the expansive Castilla y León region. Geographically bound by the Duero River between Valladolid and Burgos, the area is situated on the Meseta Central plateau at altitudes ranging from 700 to 1,000 meters above sea level. The soils here consist of calcareous clay mixed with varying amounts of gravel and sand. The region's continental climate is characterized by extreme temperature fluctuations, featuring hot, dry summers and long, harsh winters. The high elevation creates significant diurnal temperature shifts during the growing season, where warm sunshine ensures the ripening of the grapes, while cool nights are crucial for preserving their natural acidity.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Castilla y León
Castilla y León is Spain's largest autonomous region and makes up a massive part of the northwestern and central part of the Iberian Peninsula. The region is dominated by the vast plateau, Meseta Central, which lies at an altitude of 700 to 1,000 meters above sea level. Geographically, the area is tied together by the Duero river, which runs across the landscape from east to west and creates the ideal conditions for viticulture along its banks and in the adjacent valleys.
The climate in Castilla y León is distinctly continental with extreme temperature fluctuations. The summers are hot and dry, while the winters are long and harsh with temperatures that often fall below freezing. The high altitude results in significant temperature differences between night and day during the growing season. The warm hours of sunshine ensure the ripening of the grapes, while the cool nights are crucial for preserving the grapes' natural acidity in the otherwise dry landscape.
The wine history in Castilla y León stretches back to before Roman times. The area houses some of Spain's most recognized appellations, including Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Toro and Bierzo. The red wine production is primarily centered around the grape Tempranillo, which locally goes by names such as Tinto Fino or Tinta de Toro, while the white wine production is especially known for the Verdejo grape from Rueda. The region's wine culture is deeply rooted in the harsh climate and the high altitude, which has made Castilla y León one of Spain's most significant wine areas.
