Conde de Siruela La Horra Santa Eulalia 1999
The 1999 Conde de Siruela La Horra is a Denominación de Origen red wine produced by Bodegas Santa Eulalia S.A. in the historic wine town of La Horra. The estate's history took a significant turn in 1988 when the well-established Frutos Villar winemaking family acquired the winery. This acquisition allowed the family to secure deep roots in the heart of Spain's prestigious Ribera del Duero region and expand their traditional wine empire.
Situated on Spain's high Duero plateau, the Ribera del Duero region is characterized by an extreme continental climate. La Horra lies in the northern, slightly cooler part of the appellation at an altitude of 800 to 870 meters. The area experiences long, cold winters and hot summers, with significant temperature fluctuations between day and night during the growing season. The deep and varied soils consist of a sandy surface layer covering deeper layers of limestone and clay. This composition forces the roots of the old vines deep into the earth to find water during the dry summer months, resulting in highly concentrated grapes.
The municipality of La Horra has a winemaking tradition that spans many centuries and is primarily dedicated to the cultivation of the local grape variety Tinto Fino, also known as Tinto del país or Tempranillo. This prominent Spanish grape is the foundation of the region's winemaking and is widely cultivated in areas like Ribera del Duero and Rioja. For this 1999 Crianza, the wine is crafted exclusively from Tinto del país grapes grown on the estate's own vineyards. Following the harvest, the wine is aged for 14 months in a combination of American and French oak barrels. It then rests in the winery's cellars for no less than a year before being released, resulting in a final alcohol content of 13.5%.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Ribera del Duero
Ribera del Duero lies on Spain's high Duero plateau, where extreme temperature swings between day and night produce concentrated grapes. The region grows almost exclusively Tempranillo, known locally as Tinto Fino, and is home to the country's most legendary estate, Vega Sicilia. The wines are deep, powerful and age-worthy with dark berries, firm tannins and great structure.
