Rioja Campo Viejo 2005
Bodegas Campo Viejo presents this 2005 Crianza red wine from the renowned Rioja region in northern Spain. The 2005 vintage achieved a score of 90 points and is described as tight and balanced. Rioja holds Spain's highest quality classification, Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa), and is the country's most historic wine region, with a modern history shaped by French winemakers in the 19th century.
The region stretches along the Ebro river valley across La Rioja, the Basque Country, and Navarra. Geographically, the vineyards are protected by the Cantabrian Mountains to the north, which shield them from cold and wet Atlantic winds, and the Demanda mountain range to the south. The appellation is divided into three sub-regions—Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa, and Rioja Oriental—where the climate transitions from cooler, Atlantic-influenced zones in the higher western areas to a warmer, drier Mediterranean climate in the east. The diverse soils consist primarily of calcareous clay, ferrous clay, and alluvial deposits with river stones in the valley floor.
This wine is crafted from a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Mazuelo. Tempranillo serves as the foundation of the blend, being Spain's primary grape variety and widely cultivated in regions such as Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and California. It is complemented by Garnacha, the Spanish name for Grenache, which is frequently grown across Spain, including Rioja, Navarra, and Aragón. In keeping with Rioja's long-standing tradition of oak maturation, this Crianza underwent a production process of 24 months of aging, which included 12 months resting in oak casks.
