Rubesco Torgiano Lungarotti 2011
The 2011 Rubesco Rosso di Torgiano is a Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) red wine produced by Lungarotti. The wine originates from Umbria, often referred to as Italy's green heart, which is the country's only landlocked region and boasts a winemaking history dating back to the Etruscans.
Torgiano is a historic wine appellation located in central Italy, south of Perugia, centered around a medieval town where the Chiascio and Tiber rivers meet. The area is characterized by a hilly landscape of vineyards and olive groves. The vineyards are primarily situated on slopes with clay and calcareous soils, providing natural drainage. The local climate features warm summers and cool winters, resulting in a long growing season that creates highly favorable conditions for viticulture. Torgiano was one of the very first appellations in Italy to achieve official DOC status in 1968.
The region's viticultural reputation is closely tied to the producer Giorgio Lungarotti, who was a crucial pioneer for quality wine in Umbria and the driving force behind Torgiano's DOC recognition. The Rubesco trademark is an exclusive Lungarotti brand. This 2011 vintage is crafted from a blend of Sangiovese and Colorino. Sangiovese is a primary Italian grape variety frequently cultivated in regions such as Umbria, Tuscany, and Emilia Romagna. The wine's label features a historical detail titled "The Harvest," depicting a relief from the Fontana Maggiore in Perugia, dating back to 1278. The wine has an alcohol content of 14%.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Umbria
Umbria, Italy's green heart, is the only region without a coastline and has a winemaking history going back to the Etruscans. It is especially known for the amber-coloured Orvieto and for powerful red wines from Montefalco, where the rare Sagrantino grape yields deep, tannic wines with great ageing potential. Sangiovese and white Grechetto also play a central role in the region's wines.
When this wine was made, the world looked very different. Here are some of the stories that unfolded while this bottle quietly aged in its cellar.
