Saint-Bris Cave Saint Prix Bersan et Fils 1989
The 1989 Saint-Bris from Cave Saint Prix, bottled by Bersan et Fils, is a distinctive white wine from the Burgundy region of France. This particular 1989 vintage achieved a score of 94 points and is recorded as a full-bodied, warm, and well-balanced year.
Burgundy, located in eastern France, was historically shaped by medieval monks who meticulously mapped the area's countless terroirs. While the region is globally renowned for its fine-meshed system of climats and almost exclusively cultivates Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Saint-Bris stands out as a remarkable exception. Situated in the northern part of Burgundy within the Yonne department, just southwest of Chablis around the village of Saint-Bris-le-Vineux, it is the only appellation in the entire region permitted to grow Sauvignon grapes. The area covers approximately 130 hectares across five municipalities and was granted AOC status in 2003, having previously held VDQS status since 1974.
The terroir of Saint-Bris features a cool continental climate with warm summers and cold winters, moderated by the nearby Yonne river. This environment creates significant diurnal temperature shifts. The vineyards are planted on soils consisting primarily of Kimmeridgian limestone—the same soil type found in neighboring Chablis—complemented by Portlandian limestone and marl. This wine is crafted from Sauvignon Blanc, a white grape variety that is more typically associated with regions such as the Loire, Bordeaux, Marlborough, California, and Washington, making this Burgundy expression a unique curiosity.
