Saint-Chinian Château Solange 1996

The 1996 Château Solange is a red wine produced in the Saint-Chinian appellation of southern France. The estate is located in the municipality of Murviel-lès-Béziers and spans 25 hectares. The vineyards are situated on hillsides, where the vines are planted in clay-limestone soils.Saint-Chinian is an AOC within the expansive Languedoc-Roussillon region, situated northwest of Béziers in the Hérault department, nestled between Faugères and Minervois. The appellation, which gained its official status for red wines in 1982, covers approximately 3,300 hectares of vineyards. The climate here is distinctly Mediterranean, characterized by warm, dry summers, mild winters, and over 300 days of sunshine annually, with the surrounding northern mountains providing a moderating influence. The southern part of the appellation is particularly known for its clay and limestone soils, matching the terroir of the Château Solange estate. This wine is vinified predominantly from Syrah, a dark-skinned grape variety also known as Shiraz. While Syrah is widely cultivated in regions such as the Rhône Valley, Australia, California, and Washington, it is also a cornerstone of red wine production in Languedoc-Roussillon. The warm, dry, and windy conditions of the Mediterranean coast provide an ideal environment for the vineyards. The wine is bottled at 12% alcohol by volume under the Appellation Saint-Chinian Contrôlée classification.

About the region

Languedoc-Roussillon lies in southern France along the Mediterranean, from Nîmes and Montpellier in the east to Perpignan and the Pyrenees in the south-west. The area is one of France's largest and most diverse wine regions, with coastal vineyards, warm plains, cooler mountain slopes and limestone-rich heights. The climate is sunny, warm and dry, often shaped by wind, which gives ripe grapes and healthy vineyards. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan are important black grapes, while Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Marsanne, Vermentino and Picpoul are used for white wine. The wines range from fresh whites and rosé to full-bodied, spicy reds with dark berries, herbs, liquorice, pepper and Mediterranean spices. The area is known for great variety, strong value for money and classic appellations such as Corbières, Minervois, Pic Saint-Loup, Faugères, Saint-Chinian, Fitou, Banyuls and Rivesaltes.

Super service and very helpful. Lost one of the bottles during transport and reported it to Bottles With History. It was fixed immediately and a new bottle was sent immediately. (Actually a better wine in my opinion) It is very difficult to guarantee that older bottles are drinkable, like the Barolo from 69 I tried. Anders came to the rescue again and of course sent a new bottle of the same caliber. Thank you very much for the good service, can definitely recommend shopping here in safe hands.
