Saumur Charles de Villeneuve 1999
The 1999 Charles de Villeneuve is a French wine originating from the Saumur appellation in the Loire Valley. Bottled directly at the property, this wine carries the Appellation Saumur Contrôlée classification and has an alcohol volume of 12 percent.
The Loire Valley follows the path of France's longest river and is historically renowned for its Renaissance castles. The region is characterized by a cool climate and encompasses a wide variety of wine-producing areas, ranging from Muscadet near the coast to Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Vouvray, and Chinon further inland.
Situated in the central part of the Loire Valley within the Anjou-Saumur region, the Saumur appellation surrounds the town of the same name. Granted AOC status in 1936, the area covers approximately 2,300 hectares divided into seven sub-appellations. The vineyards are planted on sandy and clay soils, as well as tuffeau, a soft chalk rock that defines the local terroir. Saumur is recognized for producing sparkling wines, alongside still wines in all three colors. The local production relies on Chenin Blanc for the white wines, while the red and rosé wines are primarily based on Cabernet Franc, often supplemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Pineau d'Aunis.
