De staat Washington
De staat Washington ligt in het noordwesten van de Verenigde Staten, ten oosten van de Cascade Mountains, en is na Californië de grootste wijnproducerende staat van het land. De dominante Columbia Valley AVA beslaat meer dan 11 miljoen hectare en bevat 99 procent van de wijngaarden van de staat (ongeveer 60.000 hectare beplant), evenals 16 onderliggende AVA's, waaronder Yakima Valley, Walla Walla Valley, Red Mountain (warmste), Horse Heaven Hills, Lake Chelan, Ancient Lakes en Wahluke Slope.
Het klimaat is semi-aride continentaal met slechts 150-200 mm jaarlijkse neerslag als gevolg van de regenschaduw van de Cascade Mountains, waardoor irrigatie vanuit de Columbia River noodzakelijk is. Het gebied ligt op ongeveer 46° noorderbreedte en kent daarom lange dagen in het groeiseizoen en grote dagelijkse temperatuurverschillen tussen warme dagen en koele nachten. De bodem bestaat doorgaans uit löss boven basaltgesteente met laagwatersedimenten. Cabernet Sauvignon is de meest aangeplante druif, gevolgd door Merlot, Chardonnay, Riesling en Syrah. De stijl combineert een fruitig Californisch karakter met een Europese structuur: de rode wijnen tonen rijpe bramen, kersen, pruimen, kruiden, cacao en stevige maar ronde tannine, terwijl de witte wijnen een frisse zuurgraad hebben met perzik, citrus, appel en mineraliteit. Het gebied staat bekend als producent van gestructureerde Bordeaux-variëteiten, kruidige Syrah-wijnen en kwaliteitsgerichte Riesling.

Storage
Store the bottle horizontally at 12–14°C and avoid direct sunlight, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations.
Opening
Allow the bottle to stand upright for 24–48 hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Use a professional corkscrew and open carefully.
Enjoyment
Serve at 17–18°C and be patient – there is a great difference in how and how quickly wines open up when they are aerated.
