Peza 1988
This dry red wine from the 1988 vintage is produced by PEZA. It originates from the Peza valley, situated in the Heraklion area on the Greek island of Crete. The producer notes that the Peza valley is recognized as one of Europe's oldest wine-producing areas.
The wine holds the V.Q.P.R.D. classification, a traditional European designation for quality wines produced in a specific region. It was bottled at 12% alcohol in a standard 750 ml format.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Kreta
Crete is Greece's largest island and constitutes one of the country's most significant wine regions. The island is located in the southern Aegean Sea and is characterized by a mountainous landscape that stretches from east to west. These mountain ranges create a natural barrier that divides the island and forms a series of unique microclimates that are particularly favorable for viticulture. The majority of the vineyards are located on the northern part of the island, where they are protected from the hot winds from North Africa.
The climate on Crete is predominantly Mediterranean with hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The higher-altitude vineyards benefit from cooler temperatures and breezes from the Aegean Sea. This combination of altitude and sea breezes helps create favorable growing conditions despite the southern latitude and intense sun. The soil varies greatly, but often consists of limestone, clay, and sand, which allows the vines to grow deep roots.
Crete has one of Europe's oldest wine traditions, which can be dated over 4,000 years back to the Minoan civilization, where archaeological finds bear witness to early wine production. Today, the region contains several recognized appellations (PDO), including Peza, Archanes, Dafnes, and Sitia. The area is especially known for preserving and cultivating a wide range of native Greek grape varieties, such as the white Vilana and Vidiano as well as the red Kotsifali and Liatiko, which are often blended to create the region's traditional wines.
