Montepulciano is a historic wine region located in southeastern Tuscany, situated between the Val di Chiana and Val d'Orcia valleys. Centered around a medieval hilltop town, the area has a long winemaking history dating back to the Etruscans. The vineyards are typically planted on slopes at altitudes between 250 and 600 meters above sea level. The Mediterranean climate provides warm summers and cool nights, while breezes from the surrounding hills and the nearby Lake Trasimeno ensure an even ripening of the grapes. The highly varied soil consists of a complex mix of clay, sand, limestone, and tuff, providing both structure and good drainage for the vines.
The wine is primarily based on Prugnolo Gentile, a recognized clone of Sangiovese Grosso. This grape has deep historical roots in Tuscany and is cultivated mainly around Montepulciano, where it forms the backbone of the local classic wines. The name Prugnolo refers to the plum-like shape of the grapes during ripening, while Gentile denotes its specific structural characteristics. It is a late-ripening, thick-skinned variety with high natural acidity and a marked tannin structure. As part of the production method, the wine undergoes an extended maturation process in small oak barrels.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Tuscany
Tuscany is one of Italy's most iconic wine regions, with roots reaching back to the Etruscans. Sangiovese is the undisputed principal grape and forms the basis for classics such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. From the 1970s the prestigious Super Tuscans also emerged along the coast. The rolling hills produce structured red wines with cherry, herbs and firm tannins.
