Yarra Valley Yering Station 1999
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Victoria
Victoria is an Australian state with a focus on cool-climate wine production and contains over 20 official wine regions. The Yarra Valley east of Melbourne is the state's oldest wine region, dating from 1838, and comprises around 2,837 hectares with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon as the main varieties. The area is often compared to Burgundy because of its cool climate and gentle topography and is divided into Upper Yarra (coolest, Pinot/Chardonnay) and Lower Yarra (warmer, Cabernet).
Other important regions include Mornington Peninsula (maritime, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay), Macedon (Australia's coldest, sparkling), Geelong, Heathcote (characteristic iron-rich red soil, concentrated Shiraz), Beechworth (granite soil, elegant Syrah and Chardonnay), King Valley (Italian varieties), Rutherglen (world-famous fortified Muscat dessert wines) and Nagambie Lakes (old Shiraz vines from 1860). The soils range from grey sandy loam to red volcanic soils, and oceanic breezes give long, slow ripening. The wines classically have an elegant, fresh profile with moderate alcohol levels; Pinot Noir shows cherry, strawberry, spices and fine tannins, while Chardonnay is stone-fruit and citrus-driven with high acidity. The area is known as Australia's most diverse cool-climate region and a pioneer of elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
